Seroprevalence of Transfusion Transmitted Infections among Sudanese Blood Donors of Kosti Teaching Hospital: A retrospective Study

Although blood transfusion is vital replacement therapy in many conditions and diseases, unsafe donor blood can expose the recipients for several harms and consequences. Understanding the epidemiologic pattern of transfusion- transmitted infections (TTIs) is helpful in diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of illnesses. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of TTIs among volunteer blood donors of Kosti Teaching Hospital, Kosti, Sudan. Material and Methods: This was a single year retrospective epidemiological study conducted during 2017, to gather data of volunteer blood donors of Kosti Teaching Hospital. Data of 4152 donors has gathered from the blood bank records and statistically analyzed using SPSS software version 21. Results: The prevalence of TTIs was 15.53% and rate of HIV, HBV, HCV, and T. palladium infections were 3.9 %, 5 %, 1.8%, 0.7%, respectively. Out of 4152 blood donors, 0.6% had co. infections. Furthermore, there was no significant different in the co-occurrence of multiple infections among blood donors, P?.05. HIV/T. palladium and HIV/HCV were the most frequently detected co-infections.
